Southside’s Unprecedented Winning Streak Comes to an End At Perth

The Southside Flyers could not secure a victory at the Bendat Basketball Centre against the Perth Lynx on Friday night, being defeated by 8 points. This loss ended their winning streak of 5 matches.

 

The hosts were jumped by Perth early on, opening with a 15-4 run and leading 21-8 with 3.22 left in the quarter. However the Flyers didn’t give up as their team efforts kept them alive into the tie.

 

At the end of the first half, the Lynx were in 9 points lead with a scoreline of 31-22 but not for long as the second quarter was all about the Flyers comeback.

 

They ended that quarter with a 2-point advantage over Perth. Starting in the third quarter, they maintain tight control over the game and aim to win 6 straight games.

 

Despite maintaining a 3-point lead at the end of the third quarter, the Flyers were unable to hold their advantage and eventually fell behind late in the fourth.

 

Perth ended up claiming a 94-86 win, with Sami Whitcomb leading the way for them with 33 points and 4 assists.

 

The performance marked Whitcomb’s highest WNBL tally since the scintillating series in 2017. Besides Whitecombs performance, Amy Atwell played well with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and made 5 three-pointers.

 

For the visitors, Maddy Rocci scored 20 points and contributed to with a game high of 6 assists. Kayla Thornton got a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as well as Abby Bishop who had 13 points, 11 rebounds.

 

After a difficult start to the season, the Perth have won four straight games and moved to 6-5. Sydney Flames is their next opponent, who they have already beaten twice.

 

Southside’s next three games are away against Sydney, Canberra, and Adelaide. Before the match, Whitcomb, Atwell, Lauren Scherf, and Chloe Bibby received the good news of being selected to the extended Australian Opals squad.
