The Table Topping Boomers Need an OT to Beat The 6th Placed Lightning
The Melbourne Boomers have toppled their rivals, the Adelaide Lightning, in an entertaining match, winning 106-100 at State Basketball Centre. Both teams started the game with an attacking mindset and traded buckets early in the first quarter.
The visiting team from Adelaide took an early lead of 13 points with a score of 33-20 at the end of the first quarter. However, they were unable to keep control over the second half as Melbourne Boomers fought back hard.
The Boomers were excellent offensively and defensively in the second period. Lightning was able to score only 16 points during this period, and they conceded 21 points.
Adelaide still held an 8-point advantage, but Melbourne gradually began to back in the game.
As Boomers scored 30 points while the Lightning scored 23, the third quarter was an offensive masterpiece. Only 1 point separating the teams in the fourth quarter, setting up an epic finish.
The last half was full of excitement; both teams tried their best to seal the game. However, 91-91 was the final score of the full game, which lead to the game going into over time.
The game finished with a 106-100 final score, the Boomers edged out the Lightning in overtime of this closely contested contest.
The Adelaide team had no resistance in the OT, which ultimately caused the game to be lost despite playing well.
Mia Murray scored 34 points, and Cayla George scored 30 points, along with 10 assists and 11 rebounds, to lead the home team to victory. The Boomers kept constant pressure on the Lightning throughout the game with the help of both.
The Lightning’s Stephanie Talbot had an impressive night, leading her team with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists.
The teams meet a second time within a week, however. Table toppers Boomers won both battles to extend their winning streak to 7 games. Contrary, Adelaide is going through a difficult time; this is their third consecutive loss.
In the 2022-23 WNBL season, Boomers swept the Lightning by winning all three games.
It was an impressive result for Melbourne, who will now look ahead to their next match against Townsville Fire on Saturday. After this win, against Adelaide Lightning tonight, they will be full of confidence going into that game as they are one team likely to compete in the championship game.
