Early Life
Shane Douglas Heal was born on 6th September 1970 in Melbourne Australia. His family was sports lovers owing to which he started playing basketball at six years of age.
His father was a basketball coach who would take Shane to the court to watch players practice. Basketball was in his blood.
High School
He attended Upper Yarra Secondary College Victoria. Shane kept following his passion for basketball but unluckily couldn’t finish high school.

Shane was immensely talented which didn’t go unnoticed. He won a prestigious scholarship to the Australian Institute Of Sports from 1987 to 1988.
Shane Heal Representing Boomers At The Olympics
Shane Heal has proudly represented the Australian National Basketball team in four Summer Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 respectively. He was captain of the Boomers in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
His career as a player started in 1988 signing up for the Brisbane Bullets until his last game in 2009 for the Gold Coast Blaze.

Playing For The Minnesota Timberwolves
Like any basketball player, Shane lived his dream of playing in the NBA when he signed up for the Minnesota Timber Wolves in 1996-97.
He played 43 games for the Wolves wherein he scored 2.7 points, 0.8 assists, 0.5 rebounds, and 38.9 percent field goal on average per game.

Playing For The San Antonio Spurs
After spending a season with the Wolves he went to Europe to play international basketball only to return to the NBA in 2003.
In 2003-04 he signed up for the San Antonio Spurs in 2003-04. He played only for a single season with an average score of 3.7 points per game.
Shane Against USA Dream Team in 1996
He has played lots of good games in basketball but Shane’s warm-up game against the USA Dream Team for the 1996 Olympics Games is considered the best in his career.
The game was played at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Team USA won by 118-77 with Heal as the top scorer scoring 28 points.
It was not a closely contested game but the highlight of the game which was inscribed in the history was a running battle between NBA star Charles Barkley and Shane Heal. The duo came close to punching each other but hugged each other after the game in the spirit of the game.

He had an extensive career in the NBL. Shane played for many teams in the NBL including Brisbane Bullets, South Dragons, Gold Coast Blaze, and the Sydney Kings.

Brisbane Bullets
He played for the Brisbane Bullets in his career’s inaugural season in 1988 and from season 1992 to 1995. Shane scoring 61 points for the Bullets against the Townsville Crocodiles in 1994 is a standout performance in his NBL career.

Sydney Kings
He played for the Kings in 1996 and 2000 to 2003. No one ever thought that the Kings would even have a NBL championship. However, Shane played a pivotal role in leading the Sydney Kings to winning the NBL championship in 2003.

South Dragons
He coached the Dragons in 2006-07 while he was still playing. When Mark Price, Dragon’s Coach, resigned in 2006, the vacancy was offered to Shane Heal and he was appointed interim coach.
He mentored the team well and took them to the NBL playoffs in the first season. But the Dragons managed to win just 4 games. Consequently, Shane was removed as a coach in 2009.

Sydney Kings
Ian Robillard, head coach of the Kings, resigned and assumed the role of CEO of the Kings. Shane Heal took charge as the Head coach on 24th February 2012.
In his first match as a coach on 26th February 2012, he guided his team to a 71-69 point win over the Townsville Crocodiles.
After coaching the team for 2 years he decided not to renew his contract with the Kings for the season 2014-15. The announcement came after the King’s loss to Wollongong Hawks in the playoffs.

Wellington Saints
Shane Heal took charge as head coach of the Wellington Saints on 5th February 2014 for the 2014 New Zealand NBL season.
He guided the Saints to the Championship in his solo stint with the team. On 27th November 2014 he announced that he would not extend his contract with the Saints as the head coach for the next season.

Southeast Queensland
Shane Heal was announced as the head coach of the Southeast Queensland, WNBL, in March 2015. But the club dissolved after its first season.
· Sutherland Sharks
Shane was head coach of the Sharks Women’s team from 2018 to 2020 in the Waratah League. In 2018 he guided the Sharks to the final which they lost, unfortunately.

Sydney Uni Flames
The Flames appointed Shane as Head Coach in March 2021. It was a three-year contract. But he ended his contract with the Flames in January 2023.

Sydney Uni Flames are now Sydney Flames with a new logo, new colors, and new players which has transformed the Flames.
In July Hoops Capital, owner of the teams, announced that the team will reinvigorated for the 2022-23 WNBL season.
Flames will now play most games at the Quaycentre. The Club’s colors go from Navy and Gold to Silver and Black.
Opals’ Shyla Heal and Keely Froling, Kiwi sensation Kalani Purcell, and American stars Hannah Sjerven and Jocelyn Willoughby have been announced to represent the flames on court.
Shane Heal’s Bullying Scandal
Four-time Olympian and coach of the WNBL Sydney Flames Shane Heal was in the spotlight when he was accused of bullying by players of the Sydney Flames in the first half of this year.
The Star player denied the allegations and moved court against the decision of the management of the Flames to suspend him and hold his pay.
In the same vein Shyla Heal who is the daughter of Shane Heal, left the Flames citing personal reasons and joined the Townsville Fire to play the rest of the season.
In June 2023, Shane Heal had a small win when the federal court ordered the Flames to give access to Heal some of the emails sent between Co-owner Paul Smith and law firm Ovartis Lawyers- the firm which is overseeing the proceeding for the Flames.
