Lauren Jackson Officially Retires: Celebrating the Remarkable Comeback of a Basketball Legend

Published On: February 10, 2025

Lauren Jackson, one of basketball’s all-time greats, has officially retired from her second basketball chapter, as reported by Code Sports. This marks the end of an extraordinary journey that saw her overcome significant challenges to achieve remarkable success late in her career.

Jackson initially retired in 2016 due to persistent injuries, but she made a stunning comeback in 2022, playing for the Albury-Wodonga Bandits in the NBL1 East. Her return was nothing short of inspirational, as she led the Bandits to an inaugural championship and earned the 2022 NBL1 East MVP award. Over two seasons with her hometown club, she averaged an incredible 33.2 points, 14 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game across 27 appearances.

Her second basketball chapter also included significant achievements on the international stage. Jackson won bronze with the Australian Opals at the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Sydney and capped off her national team career with another bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Additionally, she secured her seventh WNBL championship, further cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s most decorated players.

However, after undergoing a full right knee replacement in September 2024, Jackson has confirmed that her playing days are over. “Oh no, I’m done,” she told Code Sports. “I am well and truly done, no more basketball for me.”

Despite stepping away from the court, Jackson plans to remain involved in basketball. She has taken on a part-time role as a Special Advisor and will continue her work with the She Hoops program, which aims to empower young women through basketball.

Reflecting on her comeback, Jackson expressed immense pride in what she accomplished over the past three years. “The last three years have been epic,” she said. “The Olympic bronze medal, the WNBL championship, World Cup bronze, the NBL1 championship, to come back in three years and do all that, rupture my Achilles, have Lisfranc surgery, I’ve proven so much to myself. The friendships I’ve made and what I was able to be a part of, I’ll never take it for granted.”

Lauren Jackson’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and passion for the game. Her impact on basketball, both on and off the court, will continue to inspire future generations.
